The Hryvnia has a very long history of how it became the National Currency of Ukraine. This article will talk briefly about the history and enlighten you more about the available currency types we have in Ukraine.

Short History

The History of the Ukrainian currency dates back to the time of Kievan Rus. The word Hryvnia derived from “Grivna” – which in Kievan rus times meant a decoration worn at the nape of the Neck.

The Currency was adopted by the country’s government in August 1996. Until then, it was called the Karbovanets

The currency exchange rate is in the range of about 25-30 hryvnia per 1 USD

The currency code is UAH.

The available currency types we have in Ukraine are
  • Kopeck(coins) of 1,2,5,10,25 and 50. Also, coins with denominations of 5 and 10 hryvnias have been in circulation since 2019.
  • Banknotes of 1,2,5,10,20,50,100,200,500 and 1000 hryvnias.

NOTE; Everyone living in Ukraine has until September 30, 2022, to exchange 1,2, and 5 kopecks for other coins and banknotes.
